Based on the classic novel by John Wyndham (”Village of the Damned”), “The Day of the Triffids” is a first-class excursion into a science fiction nightmare. When a spectacular meteor shower pummels the Earth, the billons who witness the event are left with an unexplained shock… they’ve all been rendered blind! Panic spreads when it’s discovered that the meteorites have also left alien spores behind which quickly grow into Triffids - gigantic, rampaging plants intent on wiping out the helpless human race!
In this reconstruction from the records of the Attorney General at Gibraltar, the story starts at New York Harbor in 1872, where Captain Benjamin Briggs (Arthur Margetson) is hard pressed to find a crew for the ‘Mary Celeste’. The ship has a reputation for being jinxed. However, he intends to sail at all costs, for he intends to marry the exquisite Sarah Briggs (Shirley Grey) on high seas. Captain Morehead (Clifford McLaglen) has already asked for her hand, and is willing to make a considerable sacrifice for her, but he loses out to the headstrong Briggs.

This starts off seriously enough, with three thugs robbing an innocent young woman at night in the city, but then switches to Vin Saxon and Carolyn Brandt doing a goofy Elvis-like rock ‘n roll number (very charming though). The next day, the thugs are bored. Picking a name at random out of the phone book, they decide to terrorize Carolyn Brandt. After some campy dramatic scenes, she is kidnapped by the goons. They decide to ransom her. After receiving the ransom call, Vin Saxon and the good-natured, but not- to-bright gardener sit around despondent, wondering what to do. “There’s only one thing to do!” exclaims Vin. The two rush off into the next room and become the costumed heroes Rat Pfink and Boo Boo…Will they get their girl? Watch and find out!
